Welcome to NoirLists.Com

Film Noir - the term first used by French film critic Nino Frank in 1946 to describe the dark nature of many Hollywood films arriving in French cinemas after the war.

Mostly crime films, the Noirs shared common themes of deception, corruption, duplicity, sex and ambivalence shot in a visual style using shadows and low-key lighting.

As Film Noir is a descriptive term used by critics rather than a movement created by directors, the distinction of what is or what makes a Film Noir is open to interpretation and has been discussed by academics and critics since the 1940s.

NoirLists.Com is an attempt to provide a complete list of all the films considered Noirs or to have Noir themes or elements, as an easy reference for fans and students.

Articles, reviews and information about releases of films are updated on a separate blog at http://noirlists.blog.com/
